Condensation transition in DNA-polyaminoamide dendrimer fibers studied using optical tweezers
When mixed together, DNA and polyaminoamide (PAMAM) dendrimers form fibers
that condense into a compact structure. We use optical tweezers to pull
condensed fibers and investigate the decondensation transition by measuring
force-extension curves (FECs). A characteristic plateau force (around 10 pN)
and hysteresis between the pulling and relaxation cycles are observed for
different dendrimer sizes, indicating the existence of a first-order transition
between two phases (condensed and extended) of the fiber. The fact that we can
reproduce the same FECs in the absence of additional dendrimers in the buffer
medium indicates that dendrimers remain irreversibly bound to the DNA backbone.
Upon salt variation FECs change noticeably confirming that electrostatic forces
drive the condensation transition. Finally, we propose a simple model for the
decondensing transition that qualitatively reproduces the FECs and which is

Ageing in disordered magnets and local scale-invariance
The ageing of the bond-disordered two-dimensional Ising model quenched to
below its critical point is studied through the two-time autocorrelator and
thermoremanent magnetization (TRM). The corresponding ageing exponents are
determined. The form of the scaling function of the TRM is well described by

Coccolithophore fluxes in the open tropical North Atlantic: influence of thermocline depth, Amazon water, and Saharan dust
Coccolithophores are calcifying phytoplankton and major contributors to both the organic and inorganic oceanic carbon pumps. Their export fluxes, species composition, and seasonal patterns were determined in two sediment trap moorings (M4 at 12 degrees N, 49 degrees W and M2 at 14 degrees N, 37 degrees W) collecting settling particles synchronously from October 2012 to November 2013 at 1200 m of water depth in the open equatorial North Atlantic. The two trap locations showed a similar seasonal pattern in total coccolith export fluxes and a predominantly tropical coccolithophore settling assemblage. Species fluxes were dominated throughout the year by lower photic zone (LPZ) taxa (Florisphaera profunda, Gladiolithus flabellatus) but also included upper photic zone (UPZ) taxa (Umbellosphaera spp., Rhabdosphaera spp., Umbilicosphaera spp., Helicosphaera spp.). The LPZ flora was most abundant during fall 2012, whereas the UPZ flora was more important during summer. In spite of these similarities, the western part of the study area produced persistently higher fluxes, averaging 241 x 10(7) +/- 76 x 10(7) coccoliths m(-2) d(-1) at station M4 compared to only 66 x 10(7) +/- 31 x 10(7) coccoliths m(-2) d(-1) at station M2. Higher fluxes at M4 were mainly produced by the LPZ species, favoured by the westward deepening of the thermocline and nutricline. Still, most UPZ species also contributed to higher fluxes, reflecting enhanced productivity in the western equatorial North Atlantic. Such was the case of two marked flux peaks of the more opportunistic species Gephyrocapsa muellerae and Emiliania huxleyi in January and April 2013 at M4, indicating a fast response to the nutrient enrichment of the UPZ, probably by wind-forced mixing. Later, increased fluxes of G. oceanica and E. huxleyi in October-November 2013 coincided with the occurrence of Amazon-River-affected surface waters. Since the spring and fall events of 2013 were also accompanied by two dust flux peaks, we propose a scenario in which atmospheric dust also provided fertilizing nutrients to this area. Enhanced surface buoyancy associated with the river plume indicates that the Amazon acted not only as a nutrient source, but also as a surface density retainer for nutrients supplied from the atmosphere. Nevertheless, lower total coccolith fluxes during these events compared to the maxima recorded in November 2012 and July 2013 indicate that transient productivity by opportunistic species was less important than "background" tropical productivity in the equatorial North Atlantic. This study illustrates how two apparently similar sites in the tropical open ocean actually differ greatly in ecological and oceanographic terms. On the predictive power of Local Scale Invariance
Local Scale Invariance (LSI) is a theory for anisotropic critical phenomena
designed in the spirit of conformal invariance. For a given representation of
its generators it makes non-trivial predictions about the form of universal
scaling functions. In the past decade several representations have been
identified and the corresponding predictions were confirmed for various
anisotropic critical systems. Such tests are usually based on a comparison of
two-point quantities such as autocorrelation and response functions. The
present work highlights a potential problem of the theory in the sense that it
may predict any type of two-point function. More specifically, it is argued
that for a given two-point correlator it is possible to construct a
representation of the generators which exactly reproduces this particular
correlator. This observation calls for a critical examination of the predictive

Ageing in bosonic particle-reaction models with long-range transport
Ageing in systems without detailed balance is studied in bosonic contact and
pair-contact processes with Levy diffusion. In the ageing regime, the dynamical
scaling of the two-time correlation function and two-time response function is
found and analysed. Exact results for non-equilibrium exponents and scaling
functions are derived. The behaviour of the fluctuation-dissipation ratio is
analysed. A passage time from the quasi-stationary regime to the ageing regime
is defined, in qualitative agreement with kinetic spherical models and p-spin

The four fixed points of scale invariant single field cosmological models
We introduce a new set of flow parameters to describe the time dependence of
the equation of state and the speed of sound in single field cosmological
models. A scale invariant power spectrum is produced if these flow parameters
satisfy specific dynamical equations. We analyze the flow of these parameters
and find four types of fixed points that encompass all known single field
models. Moreover, near each fixed point we uncover new models where the scale
invariance of the power spectrum relies on having simultaneously time varying
speed of sound and equation of state. We describe several distinctive new

Magnetic order in double-layer manganites (La(1-z)Pr(z))1.2Sr1.8Mn2O7: intrinsic properties and role of the intergrowths
We report on an investigation of the double-layer manganite series
(La(1-z)Pr(z))1.2Sr1.8Mn2O7 (0 <= z <= 1), carried out on single crystals by
means of both macroscopic magnetometry and local probes of magnetism (muSR,
55Mn NMR). Muons and NMR demonstrate an antiferromagnetically ordered ground
state at non-ferromagnetic compositions (z >= 0.6), while more moderate Pr
substitutions (0.2 <= z <= 0.4) induce a spin reorientation transition within
the ferromagnetic phase.
A large magnetic susceptibility is detected at {Tc,TN} < T < 250K at all
compositions. From 55Mn NMR spectroscopy, such a response is unambiguously
assigned to the intergrowth of a ferromagnetic pseudocubic phase
(La(1-z)Pr(z))(1-x)Sr(x)MnO3, with an overall volume fraction estimated as
0.5-0.7% from magnetometry. Evidence is provided for the coupling of the
magnetic moments of these inclusions with the magnetic moments of the
surrounding (La(1-z)Pr(z))1.2Sr1.8Mn2O7 phase, as in the case of finely
dispersed impurities. We argue that the ubiquitous intergrowth phase may play a
role in the marked first-order character of the magnetic transition and the
